Funded by the Global Environment Facility and led by the UN Environment Programme, UrbanShift is working to transform cities for people and planet through sustainable, integrated, zero-carbon urban development.
From coastal management measures in Surat, India to low-emission zones in Teresina, Brazil and upgraded informal settlements in Kigali, Rwanda, UrbanShift’s mission is to cultivate an urban development practice that is rooted in equity and integration, addressing not just one urban challenge, but many.
UrbanShift collaborates with more than 23 cities in Asia, Africa and Latin America on a range of cross-sectoral strategies, reducing carbon emissions and conserving biodiversity while fostering sustainable, equitable growth. The initiative takes a two-fold approach to advancing integrated and sustainable development. Through on-the-ground investments in participating cities, UrbanShift engages directly with local officials, urban practitioners and national governments to plan and implement innovative, cross-cutting solutions that address multiple urban issues. And To complement the local projects, UrbanShift offers a suite of capacity-strengthening activities to connect cities with global expertise and cutting-edge research in the field of integrated urban development. These activities offer cities opportunities to enhance their strategic urban planning skills, engage with the private sector, and exchange best practices with their peers at virtual and in-person events.
